Mark's Money Tip:

21st Century Community Learning Center sub-grantees will be allowed to carryover up to 25% of their previous year’s allocation. Carryover amounts will be uploaded into the Grants Management System (GMS) in batches once the sub-grantees FY 2017 closeout reports are completed. Sub-grantees will have to do an amendment on the GMS and have the amendment approved by the Department of Education (DOE). The amendment will include budgeting their carryover funds, explaining why the funds were not spent and providing a justification of how the funds will be spent.

Mark Gageby is a management analyst for the South Dakota Department of Education and oversees funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program.

Summit School District

Schools Served: Kindergarten through 12th Grade

After-School Program:3:41pm to 5:00pm with transportation provided for regular bus route students

Daily Attendance: 40 students

Summer Program: Monday through Wednesday 8am-8:30am breakfast, summer enrichment 8:30am to 2:30pm with additional Thursday’s field trips.

Daily Summer Attendance: 47 students

The Summit 21st CCLC OST and Summer Enrichment Program offers a range of after-school and summer enrichment programs for free to all K-12th grade students attending Summit School. They provide educational enhancement opportunities such as reading/math clinics, homework help and Spanish lessons, community service projects, a daily healthy snack and free breakfast and lunch during the summer program. They also offer free choice activities such as craft projects, physical fitness, S.T.E.M. projects, field trips and community events.

They just started the second year of programming and have found the students in K-6th grades enjoy their free choice days the most. “OST is really fun! My favorite activity is Fun Zone. I really like to play twister with my friends. I am glad Summit has an OST Program” (Anna, Age 9).

Students in 6th-12th grade have fully embraced community service projects. Last year, 22 students completed 15-35 hours and 8 students completed a full 50 plus hours! Some projects included: painting a mural for the school, making thank-you's and banners for Veterans and First Responders, cleaning up the town, making teacher and staff appreciation gifts, visiting elderly in the nursing home, as well as helping at local suppers, festivals and sporting events.

The two main components they focus on are educational enhancement time with K-4th grade students and community service. This year they would like to expand more on community service and enhance their life skills lessons.

There are two main community events throughout the year:
Lights on Afterschool: This event is hosted during the first semester at parent/teacher conferences. It gives parents and students more of an incentive to attend conferences by providing fun Halloween activities, prizes, and food. This event is open to the community and hosts several local businesses and organization booths.
Summer Family Festival: During the last week of Summer Enrichment Program, students are able to show off their accomplishments and hard work to their families and enjoy fun in the sun!



   

SD Toolkit for Engaging Parents and Families

  
    This Toolkit was developed to be a navigation tool for establishing and maintaining meaningful and trusting partnerships with parents and families. The Guide and Toolkit each have 5 sections: Getting Started; Physical Environment; School-wide Practices; Communication; and Bringing it Home. Each section is intended to provide information and ideas for educators on how to build meaningful partnerships with parents and families. Lights on Afterschool

  
    Lights on Afterschool is scheduled for October 26, 2017. When you register your event as an official Lights on Afterschool celebration, you’ll receive an event starter kit, which includes 10 free posters to help you promote your event, and make you eligible for cool prizes each week.
