A Note from Sandra
As many agencies prepare for a new year and others continue their operations, the start of a new school year is akin to the start of the new calendar year. We think about what we want to keep, what we want to do differently, set goals, and start new procedures. I hope that includes time to make healthy steps. Many organizations, including the School Nutrition Association, have programs that provide ideas for achievable goals that help you build in new healthy routines. SD’s School Nutrition Association has won several monthly awards for participants meeting the challenges.
Some agencies are winding up their summer meal programs that provide nutritious food to children in areas of need and help reduce that summer gap in learning. Agencies provided promotions to encourage children to read and be active in addition to getting nutrition. Thanks for your efforts to meet the needs. It will be time to start planning for next summer before you know it!
Child & Adult Nutrition Services has several new staff members. We continue to assess tasks and increase our cross training among all programs in the coming year. Over the summer we welcomed Mikayla Hardy and Carrie Weller to our group. A listing of our staff members and contact information can be found on the DOE website at

New meal patterns have been announced for the Child & Adult Care Food Program. We are assessing the potential to allow agencies to implement them early, if they so choose.
New federal processes require agencies that receive money or food to have DUNS numbers and to register them in SAM, and for us to provide Grant Award Notifications; new state procedures require us to have specific language in attestation statements; and new regulations for FDPIR and CSFP resulted in changes to the agreement and notifications to participants for certain organizations.
I hope that you will find success as you move on in to the new program year. We say it often but it is never said too much: Thank you for all you do to care for the students, children, and families in our state and for one another.

CANS Welcomes Back Karen Webber-Boyer
Hello. My name is Karen Webber-Boyer. I am one of the new program specialists with the Child and Adult Nutrition Division. However, I am not new to many of you as I provided assistance to the National School Lunch Program Food Distribution and TEFAP programs during the 2014-2015 school year. I served in the position that Darcy Beougher now fills. I left the division for a short time and am happy for the opportunity to rejoin the committed and dedicated CANS team! I am looking forward to learning and applying my new duties supporting NSLP, TEFAP and other CANS programs as they are evolve and are defined.
I grew up on a ranch south of Ft Pierre with 4 brothers, moved to my grandfather’s ranch on Bad River for a short time and later moved to Ft. Pierre where I live with my husband Duane and our four rescued dogs.
I have been employed with state government for almost 26 years – and counting – with 23 years with the Department of Agriculture. Throughout the many years, I have been blessed to work for, and with, great people whom I have learned so much and am excited to learn much more in my position as program specialist with CANS.

CANS Welcomes Mikayla Hardy
Hello! My name is Mikayla Hardy. I recently graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. While going to school at SDSU I worked at Advance, which is a community support provider in Brookings. I am originally from Aberdeen, SD. I graduated from Aberdeen Central High School. While in high school I worked as a lifeguard and swimming lesson instructor at the YMCA. I was also a nanny for a few summers while I was in college.
I will be working mostly with the school nutrition programs. I am excited to get started and to learn all there is to know about the child and adult nutrition programs and to provide the schools with the tools necessary to make their nutrition programs the best they can be.

Good nutrition is the cornerstone of good health. A balanced diet filled with a variety of nutritious foods helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, hypertension, and obesity. In addition, when young children develop healthy eating habits, that include nutritious foods, they are more likely to continue these healthy habits into adulthood. Therefore, this memo will feature three key reasons to incorporate seasonal foods in your child care menus for good nutrition.

• Some of the agencies are not seeing all months available –June is still showing and should not (no deliveries in June). Software Company is working on the fix for this.
• Asian Food Solutions has sent me a letter (July 19) that requests schools to not menu their items until mid to late October. Due to production issues following the recall of Pilgrims Pride Waco Plant.
- The schools ordering Tangerine chicken item 300204 on survey 123 for September will not be receiving due to the production issues.
- October survey requests will not be added to the October order for Asian Food items.

Summer Food Service Program and South Dakota Hunger Summit and Western SD Partners Against Hunger Workshop - Save the Dates
The Summer Food Service Program had 44 sponsors and 93 sites this summer. The SFSP Administrative Reviews are underway. The sponsors will complete surveys regarding the program to be used to plan for the 2017 session in late September and early October.
South Dakota Partners Against Hunger work toward solving hunger issues in the state. If you would like to learn more about ways to address hunger, meet with community partners and grass root stakeholders you can plan to attend any of the events being planned for this fall. Save the date for the Western SD Hunger Workshop – sponsored by South Dakota Partners Against Hunger being held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in Rapid City, SD at the Calvary Lutheran Church, 5311 Sheridan Lake Road. The South Dakota Hunger Summit – sponsored by South Dakota Partners Against Hunger and the McGovern Center is being held on Thursday, November 3, 2016 in Mitchell, SD.
The programs that the South Dakota Department of Education will have presentations or information available at includes: Summer Food Service Program, Seamless Summer Option, The Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Registrations for the events are asked for in advance and will be available soon on the

Verification – Getting Started
CANS is preparing to host webinars specific to how to conduct and report results of verification activities. We will work through the Verification process and the Verification Collection Report, also known as the 742 form in two separate webinars.
Watch for updates and information as to when the webinars will take place. Additionally, please keep your eyes on your email for similar notification and instructions.
Remember-you can begin verification activities once the application approval process for the current school year begins and there are approved applications on file. Please refer to the SY16-17 Eligibility Manual for more information or contact the CANS office. The sooner the process starts, the easier it is to meet the November 15 deadline!

NEW INFORMATION ON HOUSEHOLD ELIGIBILITY – Household not applied
ELIGIBLE HOUSEHOLDS THAT HAVE NOT APPLIED
Local school officials may complete an application for a child known to be eligible for meal benefits if the household has not applied. When exercising this option, the school official must complete an application on behalf of the child based on the best household size and income information or Other Source Categorical Eligibility status known to the official.
The source of the information must be noted on the application. Names of household members, the last four digits of the social security number, and the signature of an adult household member need not be secured. These applications are excluded from verification. However, the household must be notified that the child has been certified to receive free or reduced price benefits. This option is intended for limited use in individual situations and must not be used to make eligibility determinations for categories or groups of children.

It is understood that situations do present themselves where this could be a great benefit to children in some households. However, this process can be used only in situations of an extreme nature. Applications gathered this way, with no access to verifying information, should be a rarity in your program, not the standard.

Adding Operating Sites to the SFA
Held over from previous month: As some may recall, all SFAs were required to have one week of menus reviewed by the State Agency, in order to be considered certified. This certification is considered ‘one-time only’, and was used to demonstrate that the SFA is able to plan menus which meet meal pattern requirements.
Please look at the two options below, to determine if the newly added site DOES or DOES NOT need to certify menus with the CANS Office:
1. If a menu certified SFA adds a site to their agency, and the newly added site is using a menu planner which is outside of the SFA (for example, a hutterite colony school or secondary menu planner outside the immediate scope of the certified district), the newly added site will need to certify menus with the CANS Office.
2. If the newly added site is following the same menu plan and direction as the previously certified SFA, the site does not need to go through the work of certifying menus.

Chamberlain School District earns Alliance for Healthier Generation Bronze Award
Chamberlain School District has earned the Alliance for a Healthier Generation Bronze Award. They are also the first district in South Dakota to have all schools receive national recognition by receiving the Bronze Healthy Schools Award and the first South Dakota High School to ever receive national recognition!
Team members include: Holly Evans, Luke Giese, Linda Johnson, Jerry Rhodes, Kelli Pazour, Cassie Pearson, and Shandra Thomas. Linda Johnson, School Nurse, was instrumental (the work-horse) in leading the group to achieve this honor!

Breakfast in School
Are you looking for ideas to implement breakfast, expand it, or increase participation? Is the connection made between breakfast and learning? Did you know breakfast can help decrease tardiness? Several groups have ideas and resources such as No Kid Hungry, Dairy Council of the Midwest, Food Research Action Center, Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and School Nutrition Association support breakfast availability and expansion. There is even a website for breakfast in the classroom! You can find it at
http://breakfastintheclassroom.org/. Groups working together can help spread a consistent message and maximize the limited resources.
Are you promoting breakfast? Do you know if children eat at home? Do you set schedules for classroom and busses to give children time to eat breakfast?
The agency’s application can be modified at any time to make changes such as adding breakfast, doing a pilot breakfast, or breakfast in the classroom.
As a reminder, schools that charge for meals and offer breakfast and lunch are required to notify families at least twice annually that if they are eligible for free or reduced price lunches, they are also eligible for free or reduced price breakfasts. One of the notices is in the application packet. The other notice can be done through a variety of methods such as robo-calling, website, printed on menus, special promotions, newspaper or newsletter articles and announcements, postcards, emails, etc.
