Apply for Homeland Security grant funding by Aug. 1
Applications for Homeland Security grant funding are being accepted until Aug. 1. State and local, public and private nonprofit agencies, including public and non-public schools, are eligible to apply.

U.S. Ed releases draft rules related to ESSA
The U.S. Department of Education has released draft rules related to the new Every Student Succeeds Act. The South Dakota Department of Education is examining them and will make public comment back to U.S. Ed. Others are also encouraged to review the rules and offer public comment directly to U.S. Ed.

Teacher mentoring work group begins discussions
Senate Bill 133, part of the 2016 education package, includes development of a statewide mentoring program for teachers. The work group leading this work held its first meeting May 11, in Pierre. Follow this group’s work on the Department of Education website.

Teachers needed to help develop new science assessment
The South Dakota Department of Education is developing a statewide assessment aligned to the new science standards. Teachers are needed for the Science Achievement Level Descriptors work group, which will begin meeting in August. Please share this information with any of your teachers who would be a good fit for this work.

Board adopts new content standards in CTE career clusters
The Board of Education adopted new career and technical education standards in six career clusters at its May meeting. New standards include Architecture & Construction; Education & Training; Foundational Career & Technical Education; Information Technology; Law, Public Safety, Security & Corrections; and Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics (STEM).

Proposed rule changes up for public hearing June 20
The South Dakota Board of Education is meeting June 20 in Pierre. Several proposed rule changes will be up for public hearing. The proposed rules are presented in one package here. Read on for a summary and information on how to submit public comment.

School counselor certification law going into effect
This is a reminder that SDCL 13-10-17 goes into effect July 1. The law requires that anyone employed as a school counselor must be certified as a school counselor. Anyone who is not a certified school counselor cannot hold the title of ‘School Counselor’. An alternative title may be used, such as ‘Student Advisor.’ Questions can be directed to Andrea Diehm.

Submit IES presentation proposals by June 10
The 2016 Indian Education Summit will be organized into four strands: attendance, culture/language, recruiting/retaining qualified teachers and innovation. Presentation proposals will be accepted until June 10. Find more information on the summit webpage.

21st Century School Library Award winners announced
Twelve school libraries have received the 21st Century School Library Award for 2016. The 21st Century School Library Award recognizes school libraries based on performance in three areas: place, programming and professional. Congratulations to these school libraries!
