New vaccination requirements begin in school year 2016-17
Beginning in school year 2016-17, the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) and MCV4 (Meningococcal ACYW) vaccines will be required for entry into the 6th grade. The change is a result of Senate Bill 28, passed by this year’s legislature and signed into law by Gov. Daugaard.

Educator Effectiveness trainings for administrators planned this summer
To continue supporting promising practices around Educator Effectiveness, the Department of Education is offering a series of trainings for administrators this summer with topics such as providing evidence-based feedback and leadership behaviors requisite to building trust.

Don’t forget! Check status of waivers to administrative rule
Your school district may have a waiver from administrative rule that expires June 30. The list of current waivers is available on the Department of Education’s website. Districts with End of Course or Credit by Exam waivers set to expire will need to file an end-of-term waiver report, and if desired, make application for a new waiver.

Summer and fall dual credit registration now open
Registration for summer dual credit courses is now open. Students who will be seniors in fall 2016 may apply for admission to these courses. Registration for fall courses at the technical institutes is also open, and registration at Board of Regents institutions opens April 25.

Submit Verification of Educational Structure forms by April 15
The Verification of Educational Structure system is open. All districts must complete the change form by April 15, even if there are no changes to be made. The Department of Education is collecting educational structure changes for the 2016-17 school year.

Individuals needed to serve on health education standards work group
South Dakota will review health education content standards this summer. The application, meeting schedule and work group expectations are now available for those interested in reviewing these standards. K-12 and postsecondary educators, parents and community members are encouraged to apply by April 20.
