New statewide teacher mentoring program gets underway Senate Bill 133, part of the 2016 education package, created a program to provide for the mentoring of first-year teachers in South Dakota school districts. A statewide program has been developed, and funding is also available for districts that wish to handle mentoring locally. |

Need a pre- and post-assessment for your SLO? Check these out! SLO and Assessment work groups sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Education met during spring and summer 2016 to develop standards-based assessments that can be used to pre- and post-assess students as part of the SLO process. These assessments and accompanying SLO Process Guides are available in a variety of content areas and grade levels. They can be found on the DOE website. |

It features many of our state’s award-winning teachers and is shared with teacher preparation candidates at our public universities, South Dakota public schools, legislators and other key stakeholders. SDMyLife updates: new magazine available; trainings scheduled The new issue of SDMyLife is now available for educators to order, and a variety of SDMyLife trainings are scheduled this fall, including webinars focused on SDMyLife implementation for 6th grade students. |

Suicide prevention training requirement begins July 2017 Senate Bill 129, passed by the 2016 Legislature, requires anyone applying for an initial or renewal certificate as a teacher, administrator or other education professional to participate in suicide awareness and prevention training. The requirement begins July 1, 2017. The state Board of Education has now adopted training guidelines. Find more info on the DOE website. |

ESSA Implementation: Let’s talk South Dakota work groups have been meeting throughout the summer to develop the state plan required by the Every Student Succeeds Act. A new listserv dedicated to issues around implementation of the ESSA in our state has been created. Through this listserv, DOE is posing questions on topics on which broad input is needed. |
