Teacher feedback wanted on revised math, ELA, health standards
Work groups reviewed and revised the state’s math, English language arts and health education standards throughout summer 2016. All K-12 educators are encouraged to provide feedback on these proposed changes by May 15, 2017.
Bringing Native American culture into your classroom
The Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards are state content standards intended to help guide South Dakota K-12 educators in teaching Native American history and culture. Upcoming trainings will help teachers weave the OSEU together with social studies standards to create relevant lessons for all students.
Each year, education professionals from across the state and around the country attend this summit to access high quality professional development, information on the latest trends and proven best practices in the field of Indian education. We seek to showcase successful projects, programs and initiatives for all ages, from preschool to postsecondary.
Four SD educators earn Presidential Award
Four South Dakota educators were among those honored in Washington, D.C., recently as recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Congratulations to these outstanding educators!
The Systems Change Conference is one of the region’s premier professional development events for educators. It promotes ideas, strategies and resources to help schools make positive changes to increase student achievement. On the evening of Oct. 13, the 2017 South Dakota Teacher of the Year will be announced during a special recognition banquet.
The South Dakota State Library announces access to a suite of Ebsco databases at no charge to all South Dakota schools. This includes general and scholarly e-resources, such as Academic Search Premier, and subject-specific e-resources including health and business. Ebsco’s new Explora is designed for K-12 student and educator research.
TIE is conducting a survey to gauge interest in re-establishing the South Dakota Council for the Social Studies. The group has been inactive for several years. Provide your input by completing this survey by Oct. 1.
School libraries have a unique opportunity to join with thousands of other libraries and schools around the country to read the same book to as many kids as possible. This year’s selection is “The Bear Ate Your Sandwich.” A limited number of free books are still available for order from the State Library.
The dyslexia stakeholders group was assembled to help guide the state on how to better assist schools in identifying and serving students with dyslexia. For more information on the group, including meeting minutes, please visit the Department of Education website.
